Arlan Hamilton

Founder of Backstage Capital & Runner, Author, and "Venture Catalyst"

Arlan Hamilton, founder at Backstage Capital and HireRunner.co, is a serial entrepreneur, author, and master multi-tasker. She founded Backstage Capital in 2015 to invest in founders who are people of color, women and/or LGBTQ. Since its founding, Backstage has raised nearly $30 million and invested in 200 startups led by underestimated founders. Arlan is also the founder of HireRunner.co, a startup that connects outstanding employee talent with inclusive companies. Arlan published her book, “It’s About Damn Time,” in 2020, detailing her journey from homelessness to venture capital trailblazer. Arlan also hosts the popular podcast “Your First Million”, and in 2018, was the first non-celebrity Black woman to grace the cover of Fast Company magazine. Arlan is a big proponent of paying it forward and supporting other underestimated people in the tech industry and beyond. She’s a limited partner in 27 funds led by emerging, underestimated managers, and she and her mother, Mrs. Earline Butler-Sims, have established scholarship programs for Black students at Oxford University, HBCU Dillard University, and Harvard Law.

Brian Smith

Founder, UGG

Graduating in 1978 as a Chartered Accountant in Australia, Brian came to California looking for the next big opportunity to bring back to Australia. While studying at the UCLA Graduate School of Management he observed that there was no sheepskin footwear in the US. With only $500 in capital, he imported boot samples and over the next seventeen years built the UGG Australia brand into a multi-million dollar international enterprise. He sold in 1995 and the brand has continued to grow to exceed a billion dollars in annual sales for the past six years. Brian is one of the most sought after International business leaders in the country today. He is committed to teaching entrepreneurs how to leverage their most precious assets from within, and to recognize and pursue their passions to create a fulfilling and successful life. Brian has authored the book “The Birth of a Brand – Launching Your Entrepreneurial Passion and Soul”, is a sought after Keynote speaker and mentors small business owners. He spends his time with his family and friends in Southern California and enjoys surfing and contributing to humanity.

Neil Parikh

Entrepreneur and Co-Founder of Casper Sleep

Neil Parikh is an entrepreneur and co-founder of Casper, the global sleep brand. He co-founded Casper in 2014 with the ambition of developing technology to help the world sleep better. He helped grow the company to over $500 million in sales and through its IPO in 2020. Neil is an angel investor in over 150 disruptive companies like Affirm, Archer, Graza, Reddit, Ro, Relativity, Tia and Tomorrow Health. Neil has experience ranging from e-commerce to robotics and synthetic biology. He coaches ambitious founders on building world-class companies and is a regular speaker on startups, fundraising, bootstrapping, product development, operations and more. He is a big believer in hiring the right people who believe in the mission and vision of the company – and heavily invests in developing and managing talent.

Manager of Small Business Partnerships at Amazon

Abby Malchow is a Sr. Business Development Manager for Small Business Empowerment at Amazon where she manages partnerships that help drive success for early-stage entrepreneurs and small businesses through delivering programs and investments that support their continued growth. Abby joined Amazon in December 2018 and during her tenure she has remained focused on enabling the success of entrepreneurs, small businesses, and underserved businesses through various roles, programs, and initiatives to include creating the Military Entrepreneurship Program and supporting the launch of Amazon’s Supplier Diversity Program. Prior to joining Amazon, Abby worked at Intel Corporation and is a retired U.S. Navy Chief and combat veteran, serving more than 20 years in the military.
